I am a Professor of Astronomy at the [Harvard University](https://www.harvard.edu/) [department of astronomy](https://astronomy.fas.harvard.edu/) (and the [Center for Astrophysics](https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/)). With my [students and postdoctoral fellows](/people) in the [Cosmic Transients Lab](https://www.transients.science/) we research a wide range of topics in time-domain astrophysics, including supernovae, gamma-ray bursts, tidal disruption events, gravitational wave events, and magnetic activity in sub-stellar objects (brown dwarfs and exoplanets). We use observations across the electromagnetic spectrum - from radio to γ-rays - utilizing observatories around the world and in space. We also use machine learning and artificial intelligence approches to address the photometric classification of transients in real time and to analyze gravitational wave data.

I was previously a joint Hubble Postdoctoral Fellow (2004-2007) and Carnegie-Princeton Postdoctoral Fellow (2004-2008) at the [Carnegie Observatories](http://obs.carnegiescience.edu/) and [Princeton University](http://www.astro.princeton.edu).

I received a PhD in Astrophysics from [Caltech](http://www.astro.caltech.edu) in 2004, with a [thesis](http://www.amazon.com/Cosmic-Explosions-Beasts-Their-Lair/dp/1581122330/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387160393&sr=8-1&keywords=edo+berger) focused on multi-wavelength studies of gamma-ray bursts, their host galaxies, and type Ib/c core-collapse supernovae.
